It's a tremendous tool that can do almost anything, much like the Pro Bar. The NY hook is one of the greatest tools on the fireground, but one of the most overlooked - yet, I pulled it as soon as I stepped off the rig on our last job and it was the first and most extensively used hand tool put to work that night. Where it's really at, though, is a New York hook married to a Halligan.

We don't need a thousand of the same tool on every scene, but so many guys have no understanding of tool selection beyond "oh, this is what I learned in the academy and it's how we've always done it." That way, my partner takes the can and it frees me up to bring a New York hook. My captain, though, wants the irons which I love. When we have a 4-man rig, this means the officer has his baby Halligan while one backseat guy is the can man, and the other has the irons. Call it what you want, Halligan Tool, Halligan Bar, Hooligan Tool, there is no mistaking the go-to tool for almost any fire ground job that requires.
